TRADITIONAL UPHOLSTERY

WITH RUTH DEVLIN

Come and immerse yourself in the wonderful world of traditional upholstery… hammers, tacks, calico…only traditional skills taught, no staple guns!

Each course is outlined below. To book your place please fill in the form at the bottom of the page and Ruth will get in touch with more information.

The courses are open to all levels of skills and are suitable for complete beginners or for anyone who would like a refresher course.

We encourage everyone to start with the stool project (either the two day or one day stool workshop) in order to learn the sequence of layers required to create a traditional upholstered seat. Everything from webbing, hessian, forming a hair pad, creating a stitched roll edge (only applicable to the two day workshop) to finally applying your top fabric, taking home an upholstered stool.

We would then be delighted if you returned to take part in further classes bringing your own small pieces of furniture to upholster.

If, however, you have previous experience as an upholsterer and would prefer to bring your own furniture, instead of the specified project, you will be able to do so as long as it's an appropriate piece of furniture. Any materials used will be charged for at the end of the course.

WEEKEND WORKSHOPS

8th & 9th February 2025

Option One (Two days)

10am - 4pm

Cost: £280.00 (includes a stool frame, use of all tools required and all materials except top fabric).

If you would like to bring your own small piece of furniture, the cost is adjusted to £240.

During this weekend course you will learn a variety of traditional upholstery skills which you can then use to reupholster your own furniture.

The workshop is open to all levels of skills and is suitable for complete beginners or for anyone who would like a refresher course.

During the weekend you will learn the sequence of layers required to create a traditional upholstered seat - everything from webbing, hessian, forming a hair pad, creating a stitched roll edge, to finally applying your top fabric and going home with an upholstered stool.

Option Two (One day)

10am - 4pm

Cost: £140 (includes a stool frame, use of all tools required and all materials except top fabric).

This option offers a simpler version to option one. Participants will upholster a sycamore stool in a similar way to option one but will skip one layer of hair and the stitched roll edge.

1st & 2nd March 2025

10am - 4pm

Cost: £280.00 (includes all materials except top fabric).

Learn how to do buttoning!

For anyone who wants to expand their knowledge of upholstery or if you just fancy trying something different, come along and learn how to button a simple seat.

As always, all upholstery materials required will be provided (not top fabric).

I will require a small amount of your top fabric in advance of the workshop weekend in order for the buttons to be covered prior to the weekend course. This will be arranged at the payment stage.

The weekend will be taken at a leisurely pace to allow time to ‘fiddle’! Buttoning is a wonderful skill to have but requires patience and time!

To book a place, please complete the form below. Ruth will respond to you directly and payment is required in full to secure your place.
