TRADITIONAL UPHOLSTERY

Come and immerse yourself in the wonderful world of traditional upholstery… hammers, tacks, calico…only traditional skills taught, no staple guns!

The courses are open to all levels of skills and are suitable for complete beginners or for anyone who would like a refresher course.

We encourage everyone to start with either;

  • the stool project

    • this will enable you to learn the sequence of layers - everything from webbing, hessian, forming a hair pad, creating a stitched roll edge, to finally applying your top fabric.

OR

  • the box project (mini ottoman style)

    • this will include webbing, hessian, hair – forming a hair pad, calico and top fabric. Instead of learning how to form stitched rolls etc you will learn how to line and cover the sides of the box, taking home a fully covered useful storge box ideal for storing materials for craft projects such as sewing…felting or perhaps a ‘memory’ box.

We would then be delighted if you returned to take part in further classes bringing your own small piece of furniture to upholster.

If, however, you have previous experience as an upholsterer and would prefer to bring your own furniture, instead of the specified project, you will be able to do so as long as it's an appropriate piece of furniture. Any materials used will be charged for at the end of the course. 

6 WEEK COURSE

Tuesdays, 10am - 12pm

6th May - 10th June 2025

£245 with own small piece of furniture

(any materials used are payable at the end of the course)

£285 with stool or box & materials provided

WEEKEND WORKSHOPS

17th & 18th May 2025

10am - 4pm

Cost: £280.00 (includes a stool frame or box, use of all tools required and all materials except top fabric).

If you would like to bring your own small piece of furniture, the cost is adjusted to £240.

During the weekend you will learn the sequence of layers required to create a traditional upholstered seat - everything from webbing, hessian, forming a hair pad, creating a stitched roll edge, to finally applying your top fabric and going home with an upholstered stool.
