COLOURS OF THE EARTH

WITH OLD MILL ARTS

Tuesday 20th October 2026

10am - 4pm

£85

In this workshop you will explore the empowering crafts of making pigment, paint and pastels. You will experience the magical transformation of turning foraged stones, earth and clay, into beautifully rich pigments. You will then turn those foraged pigments into your own high quality handmade paints and pastels.

Making your own pigments is an act of rebellion and remembering. It reclaims the artist as colour maker, and reminds us of the long arc of history that came before pre-made paints became so dominant. These age-old crafts open up immense possibilities in art making, they have the potential to reweave us back into landscape and back into cultures of connection.

You will go home from this workshop with a selection of your own handmade paints and pastels to further experiment with, as well as in-depth notes which will guide you through making pigments, paints and pastels at home/in the studio.

Suitable for complete beginners and/or experienced art makers who would like to develop their skills in making art materials.

ABOUT OLD MILL ARTS

Edward Campbell and Lucy Lee of Old Mill Arts are both practicing artists and workshop facilitators. In their own creative work they work in a variety of media, all of which is either found, foraged or made from natural materials. For the last ten years they have been establishing a centre of the arts which is where they run the majority of their workshops. The name of the centre is the Old Mill which is also an exhibition space, bookshop and a dye garden . It is situated in the port village of Palnackie, on the Solway coastline in the coast of Dumfries and Galloway. The aim is to create a space for enquiry into the connection between creative practice and our natural environment. The Old Mill regularly hosts creative workshops with the emphasis on making art supplies such as paints and inks, alongside the historical and cultural context of creative materials.
