Batik Wax Resist with Moira McLennaghan BA Hons Textiles

This workshop will give the participant an introduction to the fascinating craft of Batik/Dyeing and use of resists for textiles.

Working with cotton and silk, using techniques associated with this ancient craft, this workshop will be an introduction to dyeing and layering of colours and use of texture which could then be

developed into cards, a cushion, a bag or simply be framed.

The following is a guide to the content of the afternoon…

1. Introduction to the craft, materials, equipment and dyes

2. Examples of Batik/Silk dyeing techniques shown

3. Selection and preparation of suitable designs/ideas and transferring of these onto silk/cotton.

 

Demonstrations :

1. Stretching and preparing silk/cotton

2. Wax resist/ layering for Batik, use of the Tjanting tools and exploring brushes for effects

3. Colour mixing and preparation of dyes

4. ‘Wet on wet’, rainbow effects and use of salt ,water, bleach and alcohol to create interesting textural effects on silk or cotton.

 

You will experiment on small pieces (which could be made into cards ) to practice the above techniques, progressing onto a larger piece if time allows.

 

The following materials will be supplied;

Ponge/Habotai silk pieces

All Dyes, salt mixture, wooden hoops and wooden frames

Cotton fabric, wax pellets, wax pots, tjanting tools

 

Please bring along to the workshop if you have any of the following;

(The tutor will have a supply of these materials too)

  • Mixing palette, yoghurt pots and /or small jars (all for the dyes and for water )

  • 2 old Newspapers

  • Brushes (nylon ,watercolour type)

  • Paper towel

  • Apron

  • Plastic household gloves or disposable ones

  • Drawing pins

  • Clean old tea towel

Please feel free to bring along inspirational images too - flowers, birds and landscapes are most suitable for transferring onto silk/cotton.

Moira will also have plenty of inspiration images on hand.
